Worries about employment, personal or family situations, as well as difficulties in relationships can be the cause of stress. Everyone has lived experiences related to stress. Worrying too much or spending a lot of time thinking about problems, robs us of energy and can make the situation that is causing the stress worse. We want to give you some key tips and tools to help you cope with stressful situations.

If you are a parent, we can imagine that you are feeling tired and frustrated with the idea of how difficult it is to create a balance between work and family, especially in times of the pandemic. At New Dawn our professionals can help you find healthy self-care routines, using simple and useful strategies such as: learning to make time for yourself, creating spaces for personal growth and close relationships, and creating healthy habits as a family.

As mental health experts, we focus on giving you practical options so that you can take care of yourself at home. First of all, you should know that you are by no means the first or the last person to feel overwhelmed by stress. It is important that you are aware of the effects of stress in your life, but that you can find ways to cope and manage the effects.

1. Learn ways to make time for yourself

  • Conscious breathing.

Try breathing slowly and deeply to help you lower your heart rate, adequately oxygenate your brain, and think clearly. Once you have managed to regain control, you may want to try and release muscle tension starting from head to toe. You can also accompany self-care activities with relaxation music, such as the sounds of nature or instrumental music. An effective step by step way to slow your breathing is to close your eyes and focus on your breathing, then inhale deeply filling your lungs, hold your breath for 4 seconds, and exhale slowly for the next 4 seconds and remember to relax your chest and abdomen. This should help you interrupt the stress cycle.

  • Relax muscles / relax physically

An effective strategy that will definitely help relax your body is exercise and meditation. When our stress increases, the body becomes stressed and the stress is stored. Therefore, it is necessary that you help your body to release pent up stress. Exercises such as Tai Chi, yoga or stretching can be the answer you are looking for to relax your muscles and help you deal with difficult moments of your life with calm and serenity. If you have little time, a hot bath can also be an excellent solution.

Keep in mind that anxiety generally occurs when we focus our minds on the future and depression on the past. This is why it is important to keep your focus on the present and now, it will allow us to avoid situations that increase stress.

  • Find time to do things you like

We have already addressed several solutions to relieve stress, and an additional tip is to be able to enjoy your interests. Hobbies such as making art, painting, learning to cook, are activities that allow you to explore creativity and get away from the monotony that everyday life brings. Try to make a healthy habit of spending time with others while enjoying your hobbies.

2. Cultivate spaces for personal growth and knowledge

  • Compassionate self-talk

The power of positive thinking can transform a bad day into an opportunity for growth and free you from the chains of stress. When you are the master of your thoughts, you dominate your mental state, you rule your life, otherwise the stress and problems in your life end up dominating your mental health. Therefore, the key is to be able to change negative thoughts for positive thoughts to find an opportunity for self-care and taking control of your stress.

Coping statements will take away from you feelings and thoughts that steal your energy, and stop you from becoming consumed by useless thoughts. The best way to do this is to start with short, concrete, and optimistic phrases such as: "everything will be fine", "there is little to go", or "Okay, I'm almost done." So repeating words like these are an ally to us, so we can maintain a positive attitude that will ward off the negative feelings that stress brings. This can release unnecessary tension from your body.

3. Importance of creating healthy family habits

Now, it is important to consider situations that can lead us, without knowing it, to create more stress. Sometimes we tend to put extra pressure on our children, demanding a certain level of perfectionism or being too strict, and this increases tension and stress levels. Therefore, having realistic expectations about ourselves and our children, reduces the pressure and sets achievable goals or objectives. Thus we eliminate one of the most silent and unknown sources of stress: unrealistic comparisons.

Similarly, another cause of stress is putting too many rules on our children expecting them to respond to them with blind obedience just because it is what they are supposed to do. While it is important for children to have limits and instruction, it is based on mutual trust. So the ace up your sleeve is healthy routines. Establish routines with clear and fair limits according to their age, and help them create good habits such as being autonomous, responsible and organized. It will make them feel more confident, they will be able to make better decisions, and it will create a healthy environment for them. It is of the utmost importance to foster self-confidence in our children, it will help them to be persistent, resilient in times of difficulty and overcome them.

Hopefully you learned a new way to deal with situations that were a problem before, you can even use these tips to help your family and friends. So quality mental health is possible with the right tools and lastly if you need additional support, you know that our New Dawn professionals can advise you with this.

There is a saying going around that the disease of the 21st century is stress. However, and I understand this seems contradictory, stress plays an important role in the human body. During a dangerous or threatening situation, our body reacts by causing an acceleration in the respiratory system and an increasing heart rate, muscle tension, as well as a greater consumption of energy and oxygen by the brain; in order to prepare the body for the situation. However, the problem is when these symptoms occur outside of a dangerous situation and on a constant basis.
